Length: smooth to rough
Border Collies come in a range of coats. At one end is the very short smooth coat; in the middle a medium coat; and at the other end the long, flowing rough coat. Both smooth and rough are entirely correct for the breed — a matter of coat length, not quality.
Texture
Beyond length, the hair itself varies. You will find curly, wavy and straight coats, and very different textures within each: some dogs carry a thin, fine, silky hair; others a very plush coat; and others a thicker, coarser hair that stands off the body.
